Leadership Languages to Master

Today’s leaders are expected to be adept at not just one but multiple leadership styles. They must demonstrate different strategies when managing teams, understand how to identify and develop future leaders, and know how to motivate their team in various situations. Leadership is a dynamic role with many nuances. There are so many different ways you can lead others; it’s up to you which style feels most comfortable before choosing the one that best suits you and your team on any given day. To assist you in this process, we’re going to cover three key leadership languages: Directing, Coaching, and Inspiring.

What is a Leadership Language?

A leadership language is a strategy or method you employ to get your message across and lead your people. Since there are many leadership styles, leaders are expected to have knowledge and experience in multiple languages. For example, a directing language is associated with a top-down approach to leadership that empowers the person at the top to make the final decision based on their experience, expertise, and knowledge. This is an example of a directing style, where the person at the top is directing their team to take the necessary steps to achieve a goal.

Directing

A directing language is one of the most common leadership styles. This is when individuals select the best course of action based on experience and expertise. This is often used when there is little time for training or coaching to take place. Directing is often associated with a need for clear goals and objectives. The leader is there to determine the best course of action, based on their knowledge and experience. Directing is an excellent leadership style when you have a clear idea of the task at hand. You know the end goal, have an understanding of the various factors involved and know what needs to happen in order to get there. This is a time when it’s okay to be a little direct and tell others what to do and how to do it.

Coaching

Coaching is a leadership language that empowers your team to succeed. It is based on the premise that each person has the ability to grow and succeed if they are given the right tools and environment to do so. Coaching involves helping others to identify their strengths, set and achieve goals, and solve problems. People who excel at coaching can help others to identify and reach their full potential through support and guidance. The best leaders are able to lead and coach their team at the same time so everyone wins.

Inspiring

The inspiring language is all about motivation. Inspiring leaders will often use their vision and passion for the future to motivate their team to achieve and succeed. They are optimistic and can create an atmosphere where failure is not an option. You might choose to lead with an inspiring language if you are passionate about what you do and want others to experience that same energy and enthusiasm. Some people are naturally inspired, while others must put in a conscious effort to inspire others. If you’re in the latter group, you should be prepared to put in time and energy so that when you stand up to lead, others are inspired by your vision and passion.
